TMJ Disorders
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are characterized by pain and tenderness in the jawbone and the muscles that are responsible for jaw movement. TMJ disorders can be caused by genetics, arthritis, injury and the excessive clenching and grinding of one’s teeth. In most cases, the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ disorders is temporary, and it can usually be treated with nonsurgical treatment methods.
At Admire Dental Southgate, we provide examinations on patients who may be suffering from a TMJ disorder. These examinations are very quick and easy, usually involving the following steps:
- Listening to and feeling the jawbone as it moves
- Measuring the jaw’s range of motion
- Identifying areas of discomfort on or around the jaw
The pain associated with a TMJ disorder may simply go away on its own. Other cases may require intervention to eliminate discomfort. If you are determined to have a TMJ disorder, then you may be prescribed one or more of the following methods of treatment:
- Pain Medication
- Muscle Relaxants
- Physical Therapy
- Mouth Guards
- Injection Therapy
- Surgical Treatment
