Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and Onlays are used to restore the function and appearance of teeth that are damaged in such a way that a full dental crown is unnecessary. These treatment methods are slightly more intricate than standard fillings, and they provide end-results that are stronger and more durable.
The dental care specialists at Admire Dental Southgate are proud to provide patients with restorative inlays and onlays that ensure a natural look and excellent functionality. Our practice builds every inlay and onlay using impressions of the patient’s teeth, so they have the optimal appearance and fit. Patients who receive a custom inlay or onlay will need to make two visits to our clinic. The first visit involves taking impressions of the patient’s teeth, and the second visit is when the inlay or onlay will be fitted and installed.
Inlays
A dental inlay consists of filling material that is permanently attached to a tooth’s interior. Unlike onlays, inlays will not cover any of the tooth’s cusps or points. An inlay will only cover the area inside these points. Inlays are most commonly used when a tooth has experienced too much damage to be restored with a regular filling, but not so much that it requires a full dental crown. Inlays usually leave teeth stronger than teeth that have been repaired with a standard filling since they utilize a custom-fit design.
Onlays
An onlay is different from an inlay because an onlay covers at least one of the cusps, or points, of a tooth. In fact, some onlays will cover a tooth’s entire chewing surface. Onlays are recommended when a tooth is too damaged to be repaired with a standard filling, but a full dental crown is not needed. Just like inlays, our onlays are constructed using impressions of the patient’s teeth to ensure a natural appearance and outstanding functionality.
